These maps add an incredible new layer of fun and strategy to the game, and they’ve very quickly come to be my favourite part of not just the expansion, but the game as a whole. Again, it’s not a mind-blowing addition compared to the metropolis maps, but more variety in missions is always welcome.Īnyone looking to add some more action to their BattleTech experience absolutely needs to pick up Urban Warfare, if only for the new city environments it adds. The enemy base throws out a constant stream of AI reinforcements during these missions, so if you aren’t steadily eliminating the enemy you’ll very quickly get into some deep, deep trouble. Each team in these missions has a home base, and it’s up to you to attack the enemy base while, surprise surprise, defending your own. That diversity also arrives in the form of a new mission type: Attack and Defend. It’s a simple set of tools, but it adds an extra layer of thinking to mission-prep that helps diversify the action a bit more. Thankfully, the Active Probe tool counters this and lets you reveal units that would otherwise be hidden by tech like the Electronic Countermeasure. Electronic Countermeasures jam long-range targeting systems by obscuring anyone who has them equipped, which definitely led to some frustration the first time I encountered it. It’s a really fun environment to play around in, and is now easily my favourite terrain type in the game.īeyond a new biome, Urban Warfare also adds electronic weaponry into the mix with an array of new equipment types that serve to shake up the way you play. On one occasion, a mech of mine was comfortably perched atop a 20 story building scouting out the enemy, when a cluster of well-aimed rockets took the entire structure down, sending my beautiful bot crashing to its demise. Every inch of the city terrain is fully destructible, leading to plenty of scorched earth tactics and environmental uh-oh’s. Nothing good lasts forever, though, and that includes the buildings littering these maps. ![]() Buildings can be used as vital cover during harsh firefights, or as platforms to jet-jump onto in order to flank opponents or scan the battlefield for intel. The great part of these metropolis terrains is how interactive the environment is, and how many new avenues they open up for strategising. BattleTech sometimes struggled to have a truly jaw-dropping aesthetic in battle, but night-time city missions consistently left me wide-eyed at how beautiful the environment I was busily destroying could look. Skyscrapers and office buildings fill the map and flank you at every turn, while streets are littered with abandoned cars that have been caught in the chaos as battle breaks out. Thankfully, that hole has been filled with the release of the most recent DLC expansion, Urban Warfare.Īs the name implies, the heavy focus of this DLC is on a new terrain type for missions that sees you dropping into massive metropolitan environments. Having these metal titans battling it out in the cities has been missing from the mecha strategy of BattleTech. ![]() It really puts their scale into perspective as they stride down city streets and pass skyscrapers that blot out the sky for people stood at their base. When you think of iconic mecha media and unforgettable robot anime action, you’re most likely picturing a handful of giant bots having at it in the middle of a huge metropolis. Yet, for how much BattleTech is bursting at the seams, there’s been one glaring omission since launch: freakin’ cities. ![]() There’s a wide assortment of factions and enemies and vehicles to form partnerships and rivalries with across the galaxy. You can kit up over a dozen different kinds of steel-scraping ‘Mechs with an insane variety of weapons and gadgets and upgrades and then take them out on a wide variety of missions to duke it out in harsh deserts, rich forests or frigid tundras. BattleTech is absolutely flooded with content. So for a 16:9 picture stored in a texture you can send it to a friend and, provided they are using Phoenix, tell them in IM “you’ll need to view that at 16:9”. Phoenix adds a useful little drop-list at the bottom of a texture view to let you tell it what Aspect Ratio it should be. With most Viewers you have to stretch the texture till it looks right. For me this is the killer feature as it is just so useful for enabling me to shop in a large store the way I want to.Īs I’ve blogged about before, Second Life stores pictures (textures) in squares, or rectangles made of squares, and unless the Aspect Ratio exactly matches that of the texture it’s going to be distorted. ![]() It does this because llMoveToTarget is a script command used to move things around rather than a teleport as such, so isn’t restricted by the Landing Point rules. However, there is an option in Phoenix when using the LSL Client Bridge to use llMoveToTarget for double-click TPs and this zips you straight to where you double-click even if this sim has a Landing Point. Or, worse, you get zapped back to the Landing Point. Most Third Party Viewers allow you to double-click teleport, but often you fall foul of the Landing Point and get an unhelpful message saying you are unable to TP closer than where you are. In fact it is really, really annoying when you want to cam around a large shop (for example) and then TP to where your camera view is to get closer to a vendor board, or the like. But when you are already in a sim, is it still necessary? I don’t think so. I can see the value of it, as it means people are forced to rez near a rules giver, or a prim notice, or a shop display, or the starting point on a tour, or whatever. Sim Owners have long been able to set a Landing Point to dictate where you land when entering their sim. Intra-sim teleports even when there is a Landing Pointīy this I mean teleports that take place within a sim, rather than when teleporting into a sim from another sim. I actually really like this as it is very compact and can be up all the time, unlike the Phoenix one which takes up too much screen space to be up all the time. The client-side radar / Avatar List is very compact and hung off the bottom of the Mini-Map. This is just so useful for those busy groups where people just can’t STFU in group chat but you still want to receive group notices. You can suppress Group Chat for individual groups. My friend Mariana actually ported this to Phoenix and submitted it as a patch and it was rejected as the person who rejected it didn’t see it as being useful, which was a shame as I think it is. ![]() When new IMs come in, the title bar of the ‘communicate’ menu updates to say how many are unread. ![]() When viewing your profile, groups that you have hidden from public view are shown greyed out, giving you an idea of how your profile will appear to others. ![]() It’s by no means an extensive or all-inclusive list. This is a roundup of what I consider to be genuinely useful features. As an aside, I think it’s pretty clear that the developers at Linden Lab who developed Viewer 2.x don’t, but that’s not the subject of this entry. What I like the most about Third Party Viewers such as Imprudence and Phoenix is that they are developed by people who actually use Second Life and so have features that, whilst they may not grab the headlines, are genuinely useful. ![]() The two young women in front of us immediately headed to the bar. in line at the Host Stand I saw two seats at the bar.
